Free Masterclass with MANIK (presented by IO Music Academy & Pioneer DJ/TORAIZ)
IO Music Academy x TORAIZ Present: RISING — An educational event series featuring underground producers and independent artists. Hosted at IO Music Academy in collaboration with Pioneer DJ/TORAIZ, RISING is open to the public and free with RSVP. Attendees can look forward to one-on-one interviews and production breakdowns with some of dance music's hottest up-and-coming artists.
Our first edition of RISING will feature quintessential New York City DJ/Producer, MANIK. Inspired by the sampling techniques of the greats that came before him, MANIK (born Chris Manik) is equal parts crate digger and studio junkie, relying on a diverse set of skills to get his high-quality house cuts to the finish line. His breakdown will include a deep dive on laying down ideas with his TORAIZ SP-16 sampler. Join us on October 21st (either in person or via live stream) for an inside look into Chris' production workflow and creative techniques.
MANIK fired onto the electronic music scene in 2011 with releases on Ovum, Poker Flat, and Culprit. The Queens native is the quintessential New York City DJ; a connoisseur of dance music with an inimitable style that crosses multiple genres. A seasoned crate digger, MANIK spends hours in record shops to find those forgotten records and hidden gems. Now residing in sunny Southern California, Chris is also a tastemaker and educator.
"Over the last couple of years, California based producer Manik has proved to be a master of the edit." - XLR8R
Since his electronic beginning, he has also released on labels including Bpitch Control, Kim Ann Foxman's Firehouse, Fresh Meat Chicago and he is known for cheeky edits of Sade, Janet Jackson, and the Beastie Boys. The sounds of MANIK can be found in the crates of the worlds leading underground DJs and tastemakers; Kim Ann Foxman, Maya Jane Coles, Ellen Allien, Steve Bug, and Josh Wink all being regular supporters.
As a DJ, MANIK's international profile has risen just as quickly. Having played in 40 countries: Panorama Bar Berlin, Womb Tokyo, Fabric London, Revolver Melbourne, Good Room Brooklyn and many more throughout the years. Chris continues to bring his unique brand of house and techno, old school and new school, expertly crafted music to the dance-floor.
2017 proved to be an extraordinary year for MANIK. His highly praised second album "Undergroundknowledge" on Ovum received many accolades including an 8/10 in Mixmag. Welcome To My Crate, the artists own brand/radio show has had interviews with seminal dance artists: Kevin Saunderson, Doc Martin, Juan MacLean and more. In 2018, Chris launched a full long-form conversation podcast called "Welcome To My Crate XL", along with MANIK EP's scheduled for release on Fresh Meat Chicago and Culprit LA.
