Course Breakdown

Day 1 - Film Scoring 101:

  • Discuss examples of well-known composers

  • What separates media composers from normal music makers

  • How a film composer fits into the puzzle of film production

  • Timelines for writing music to picture

Day 2 - Templates And Mindset

  • Discuss different kinds of composer templates and how they can help us offline bounce stems and be ready for when inspiration strikes

  • Sample Library talk and what kind of tools you need in your sonic toolkit

  • Pre-mix or not?

  • Talk about the way to prepare a session for writing even before playing a single note

Day 3 - Writing To Picture

  • Getting started

  • Talk about setting up markers, importing video, and starting to write

  • Finding emotional story points and how to enhance them

  • Getting a basic mix and sending off to the client

Day 4 -Different Approaches to Scoring The Scene

  • What to do if your director had different intentions for the music of a scene

  • How to rescore and be flexible with notes (composers serve the film, the film doesn’t serve its music)

  • Being vigilant to instill confidence in your collaborators

Day 5 - Recap and Critiques

  • Send Matthew your best music to picture for a chance of having it critiqued in the class.

  • Recap of the classes and tips moving forward
